Throughout my career, I've had the privilege of working with many actors and performers, helping them showcase their unique talents and personalities through their headshots. Today, I'm excited to share some valuable insights on how to make your headshots truly stand out.

1. Know Your Brand

Before you step in front of the camera, take some time to reflect on your personal brand as an actor or performer. What roles do you typically audition for? What sets you apart from others in your field? Understanding your unique selling points will help you convey your spirit through your headshots.

2. Choose the Right Photographer

Selecting the right photographer is critical. Look for someone with experience in shooting headshots for actors and performers. It's essential to work with a photographer who understands the industry's requirements and can bring out your best features.

3. Wardrobe is Key

Wardrobe choices can make or break your headshot. Opt for solid colors and avoid busy patterns that distract from your face. Bring a variety of options to the photoshoot to provide versatility. If you're unsure about your wardrobe choices, consult with your photographer beforehand. My sessions always start with a wardrobe consultation so we can choose the best options for you.

4. Mind Your Makeup

For women and men alike, subtle makeup can enhance your features and help the camera capture your best side. Avoid overly dramatic makeup and go for a look that enhances your natural beauty. Hiring a professional makeup artist can be a game-changer.

5. Expression is Everything

Your headshot is not just about your face; it's about your eyes and the emotions they convey. Practice expressions in the mirror before the shoot to find the ones that feel most genuine to you. A captivating look can leave a lasting impression.

6. Relax and Have Fun

It's perfectly normal to feel nervous in front of the camera. Take a deep breath, relax, and trust your photographer to guide you through the process. The best headshots often come when you're enjoying the experience.

7. Select with Care

After the photoshoot, you'll be presented with a selection of images to choose from. Take your time reviewing them and seek input from trusted peers or industry professionals. Your final choice should truly represent you and your brand.

Open the Door to Exciting Opportunities

Your headshot is your calling card in the entertainment industry and should reflect the talent and charisma that make you unique. Choosing the Right Background for Your Headshot

Explore different background options to guide you in making the best choice based on your industry and personal branding goals.

Your headshot is often your first introduction to potential clients, employers, and colleagues. So, ensuring it exudes professionalism and aligns with your brand is essential. One aspect of headshot photography that is often overlooked is the background – a seemingly simple element that can significantly impact the overall impression you leave. Let's explore different background options to guide you in making the best choice based on your industry and personal branding goals.

Solid Colors: Classic and Clean

A solid color background is a timeless choice for headshots. Whether neutral gray, serene white, or professional black, a solid background ensures the focus remains on you. This minimalist approach is ideal for corporate professionals, executives, and anyone aiming for a polished and clean look. Solid backgrounds eliminate distractions, allowing viewers to focus on your facial expressions and demeanor, making it an excellent choice for those in formal industries like finance or law.

Natural Environments: Authenticity and Approachability

Headshots taken in natural environments can add an element of authenticity and approachability to your image. Whether you opt for a park, an urban setting, or even your workplace, these backgrounds can subtly convey aspects of your personality and work environment. This choice is especially fitting for individuals in creative fields, freelancers, and entrepreneurs. The setting adds context to your image and can serve as an icebreaker when meeting potential clients or collaborators.

Studio Settings: Versatile and Controlled

Studio settings offer the ultimate control over lighting and ambiance. A studio can provide various backdrop options, including solid colors and customized designs. This versatility makes studios an excellent choice for individuals looking for a professional yet adaptable headshot. Actors, models, and professionals in industries requiring diverse looks might find studio settings most accommodating.

Customized Backdrops: Branding and Creativity

For those seeking a headshot that truly showcases their brand, customized backdrops are the way to go. Whether it's an image related to your industry, your company logo, or a subtle representation of your interests, a customized backdrop showcases your uniqueness and commitment to personal branding. This option is particularly suitable for entrepreneurs, speakers, and professionals in creative fields.

Guiding Your Choice

When deciding on a background for your headshot, consider both your industry and branding goals. Ask yourself what you want your headshot to convey. Is it professionalism, creativity, approachability, or something else? Tailoring your background choice to these aspirations will pro a headshot that resonates with your intended audience.

Are you still trying to decide which background is right for you? The good news is you don't have to make this important decision alone. I am here to help guide you and capture the perfect headshot. Whether you prefer a solid background, a natural environment, or a studio setting, you will leave our session with headshots representing you and your brand in the best way possible. The Art of Expressing Authenticity in Headshots

As a professional headshot photographer, my goal is to help you capture authentic expressions and showcase your true self in every photo.

In today's digital age, where first impressions are often made through online platforms and social media, your headshot can speak volumes about your personality and professionalism. As a professional headshot photographer, my goal is to help you capture authentic expressions and showcase your true self in every photo. During our session, I'll guide you through a relaxed and comfortable experience, allowing your genuine essence to shine through.

1. Establishing a Connection

One of the most critical aspects of capturing authentic headshots is establishing a connection between you and me. I believe that building rapport and understanding your unique traits and aspirations are the first steps to success. Before we start shooting, we'll sit down and discuss your goals, interests, and the message you want to convey through your headshots. This process creates a comfortable environment, allowing you to relax and be yourself during the session.

2. Making You Feel at Ease

Feeling comfortable in front of a camera doesn't come naturally to everyone, and that's completely normal. My aim is to make you feel at ease throughout the shoot. I won't rush the process; instead, I'll give you ample time to settle into the session. Whether it's cracking a joke or sharing a personal anecdote, I know how to create a relaxed atmosphere where you can be yourself without feeling self-conscious.

3. Guided Direction, Not Forced Poses

Your authenticity shines through when you can express yourself naturally. My approach revolves around providing guided direction rather than asking for forced poses. I'll gently instruct you on body language and facial expressions while encouraging you to let your personality take center stage. This way, your headshots will capture real moments that reflect the true essence of who you are.

4. Embracing Imperfections

Perfection may seem like the ultimate goal in photography, but I believe that embracing imperfections can lead to the most authentic results. I encourage you to celebrate your unique features and quirks, as these are the characteristics that set you apart. By doing so, we'll capture headshots that feel genuine and relatable, leaving a lasting impression on anyone who sees them.

5. Utilizing Natural Light and Settings

To enhance authenticity in your headshots, I prefer to work with natural light when possible. Natural light brings out the true colors and textures of your skin, creating a more genuine and warm representation. Additionally, outdoor environments add depth and context to the headshots, making them visually engaging and telling a story about who you are.

6. Patience is Key

Remember, Rome wasn't built in a day, and authentic headshots aren't snapped in an instant. I understand that capturing genuine expressions takes time and patience. I am more than willing to take multiple shots and allow you to ease into the process naturally. This patience pays off as we capture those perfect, unguarded moments that reveal the true essence of you.

Showcase your True Self

In a world where authenticity is valued more than ever, your headshots play a crucial role in showcasing your true self. Through my expertise and genuine passion for my work, I'm here to help you achieve headshots that go beyond the surface, capturing the essence of your personality.

So, the next time you're looking for captivating headshots that represent the real you, consider the art of authenticity with me. Personalize Your Headshot with Props

When it comes to headshots, the objective is clear: capturing a professional image that represents you or your business. However, there's a simple yet effective way to take your headshot to the next level—personalize it with props!

When it comes to headshots, the objective is clear: capturing a professional image that represents you or your business. However, there's a simple yet effective way to take your headshot to the next level—personalize it with props!

By incorporating meaningful objects into your photo session, we can infuse your personality, interests, and brand into your headshot, creating a lasting impression that stands out from the crowd. Let’s explore why personalizing your headshot matters and provide some inspiring prop ideas to help craft a unique and memorable image.

Why Personalize Your Headshot?

A headshot serves as your visual calling card, presenting a snapshot of your professional identity to potential clients, employers, and colleagues. While a traditional headshot can convey competence and professionalism, adding personalized props helps to humanize your image, making it more relatable and inviting. Here are a few reasons why personalizing your headshot is crucial:

1. Authenticity

By incorporating props that reflect your personality and interests, you showcase authenticity and give viewers a glimpse into your true self. This can help build trust and create a connection, which is essential in professional relationships.

2. Differentiation

In a sea of similar headshots, personalization sets you apart. By infusing your photo with unique props, you create a distinctive image that catches the eye and leaves a lasting impression on the viewer.

3. Storytelling

Props can act as visual cues that tell a story about you or your business. They provide an opportunity to showcase your passions, hobbies, or even your brand values, creating a narrative within the frame of your headshot.

Prop Ideas for Personalization

Now that you know why personalization is important, here are a few ideas to give you inspiration for props to use in your next headshot session.

1. Meaningful Mug

If you're known for your love of coffee or tea, including a beautiful mug in your headshot can add a touch of personality. It can also represent a cozy and approachable side of your professional persona.

2. Branded Items

Incorporate objects that display your name or logo, such as a custom-made pen or a notebook. These items can strengthen your brand identity, making your headshot instantly recognizable and memorable.

3. Tools of the Trade

If you have specific tools or equipment that are central to your profession, including them as props can be a great way to communicate your expertise. For example, a photographer might hold a camera, a chef might pose with culinary utensils, or an artist could feature their favorite brushes.

4. Technology

For professionals in the digital realm, incorporating items like a laptop or tablet can convey your tech-savvy nature. It showcases your connection to the modern world and indicates your familiarity with cutting-edge tools.

5. Stationery and Writing Tools

If you work in a field that involves writing or creative expression, including pens, pencils, or notebooks can symbolize your passion for your craft. These props communicate a sense of dedication and attention to detail.

6. Personal Artifacts

Selecting items that hold personal significance is an excellent way to personalize your headshot. For instance, if you're an avid traveler, you might incorporate a small globe or a vintage map. These objects tell a story about your experiences and can spark interesting conversations.

The key is to strike a balance between personalization and professionalism. While props add character and depth to your headshot, ensure they don't overpower the main focus—you. The props should complement your image and enhance the overall message you want to convey.

Make an Impact and Stand Out from The Crowd

In today's competitive professional landscape, it's essential to make an impact and stand out from the crowd. By personalizing your headshot with props, we can create an image that speaks volumes about who you are and what you represent. Make your headshot a true reflection of your personality and watch as it becomes a powerful tool for personal branding and professional success.

Flash That Winning Smile

No need to be all serious and stuffy. Show off those pearly whites with a natural smile that says, "I'm friendly and approachable!" People like connecting with people who give off good vibes. So, let that grin do the talking and attract all the right attention.

Eyes are the windows to the soul, they say. Well, it's true on LinkedIn too! Establish eye contact with that camera like you're gazing into your future success. It's all about exuding confidence and building a connection with those who come across your profile. Plus, it'll make you look like a boss!

Clean Background

Remember, it's all about you. So, keep the background clean and clutter-free. A solid, neutral-colored background or a dreamy blur will do just fine. You're the star, after all!

Rocking Your Headshot Session with a Positive Mindset

Explore five awesome strategies to help you keep your cool and maintain a positive mindset during your headshot session so you can show the world your best self!

Getting ready for a headshot session can be an exciting yet nerve-racking experience. It's not just about striking a pose and smiling but also about rocking a positive mindset that screams confidence and authenticity. Let’s explore five awesome strategies to help you keep your cool and maintain a positive vibe during your headshot session, so you can show the world your best self!

1) Visualize Your Success

Picture this: you're in the studio, feeling like a million bucks. Take a moment to visualize yourself looking confident, relaxed, and totally slaying it during your headshot session. Imagine striking killer poses, connecting with the camera, and capturing shots that truly represent the awesome person you are. Visualize success and let that positive energy fuel your confidence.

2) Jam to Your Favorite Playlist

Who doesn't love music? It has this magical power to pump us up and make us feel amazing. So, before your headshot session, create a playlist with all your favorite tunes that make you feel like a superstar. Listening to those feel-good songs will help you relax, shake off any jitters, and get into an awesome state of mind. Let the music lift your spirits and unleash your inner confidence.

3) Embrace Your Inner Actor

Forget about stiffness and formality! It's time to channel your inner actor and have some fun. Treat your headshot session like a mini-performance. Pretend you're a high-profile professional, a fierce model, or a glamorous superstar. Get into character and let that confidence radiate through your smile and body language. Embracing this playful mindset will set you free to be your authentic self and capture some incredible headshots.

4)  Take a Breather

When those nerves start creeping in, take a moment to catch your breath—literally! Deep breathing is a super simple yet powerful technique to calm your mind and reduce anxiety. Take a deep breath in through your nose, let your tummy expand, and exhale slowly through your mouth. Feel the tension melt away as you focus on your breath. This little breather will help you center yourself and approach the headshot session with a cool and collected mindset.

5)  Trust Your Photographer

As your photographer, I’m there to capture your best angles and make you shine. So, put your trust in me. Remember that I’m a professional and I’ll be guiding you every step of the way. You don’t have to think about what to do or how to look at any point. Just let go and enjoy the experience of having your headshots taken.

When it comes to your headshot session, a positive mindset is the secret weapon for an amazing result. So, before and during your headshot session, use these strategies to help you stay calm and confident. Remember, this is your moment to shine! So, relax, have fun, and let your true self shine through your headshots.

Why I’m a Studio Photographer

I rented my first studio back in 2008. Since then, I’ve moved between five different photography studios. My current studio in Belmar is by far my favorite space yet.

I rented my first studio back in 2008. At that time, I was mostly photographing weddings. But I also had a handful of clients who wanted me to take their headshots.

At first, I had clients meet me in the lobby of my condo in downtown Denver, and we would shoot portraits in the alleyway behind my building. Although it was a great backdrop, it didn't take long for me to realize that this arrangement wasn't sustainable.

I found a space on South Broadway that wasn't too expensive, had great natural light, and plenty of character. Remember the movie Field of Dreams? The famous line is, "If you build it, they will come." That's exactly what happened with my headshot business after getting my first studio.

It was a significant step up in professionalism for my business. Finally, I was officially a studio photographer. I had a private space that clients could come to where they could feel relaxed and comfortable. It was a great step in the right direction. Over the next fifteen years, I moved between five different studios.

My current studio in Belmar is by far my favorite space yet. The natural light is abundant. The high ceilings give us room to breathe. There's easy and ample parking. It's the perfect location for an easy, quick, and fun headshot session.

Whether you need corporate headshots, professional portraits, or personal branding photos, I’d love for you to visit me in my studio and experience this incredible space for yourself. I know you’ll love it as much as I do. So book your studio session here.

Why Everyone Needs a Professional Headshot

Why does everyone need a professional headshot? It’s all about creating a sense of trust in you and your business.

If you are a professional in the business world, you know that image is extremely important. When potential customers search for a business to perform a service, they first research their options. This means they will visit your website to read about what you offer, what makes you unique, and how you can help them. And if they are hiring someone to do a task that involves trusting them, they will also be interested in knowing more about the person behind the business, including what you look like.

Seeing a face behind the name helps establish trust. So, when people visit your website or social media profile, make sure the image they see is a good one. If you present a high-quality, professional headshot, potential clients will automatically trust you more. Pair this with excellent website content describing your services and how you can help solve a problem, and they will be sold. Having a professional headshot is one of the easiest ways to seal the deal when trying to gain new clients.

So why does everyone need a professional headshot? It’s all about creating a sense of trust in you and your business. When people see you as a person they can trust, they will be more likely to give you their business and also share their positive experiences with others so that you can turn potential clients into repeat customers.

Whether you need a single corporate headshot, professional headshots for an entire office, or personal branding photos for your brand, Denver Headshots is the perfect solution. Visit my website to learn about session pricing, view my portfolio, and hear from some of my clients, then book an appointment to secure your spot.

Why Every Small Business Owner Needs Personal Branding Photos

Using outdated images can harm your business. Here are four reasons why every small business owner needs updated personal branding photos.

As a small business owner, you have a lot on your plate. With the many demands and endless to-do lists you juggle daily, updating your personal branding photos may seem like a low priority. But using outdated images can harm your business. Here are four reasons why every small business owner needs personal branding photos.

1) Show clients you are invested

If you are using old photos, or even worse, none at all, it might convey that you don’t care about your business. But on the other hand, having professional photos of yourself shows current and potential clients that you're active in your business and that you invest in your business, and therefore you're invested in them.

2) Stay top of mind

For any business, staying top of mind is crucial. Whether you are trying to generate new business or gain repeat business from existing clients, you want them to think of you immediately when they need your services. Showing up in your marketing with current, high-quality photos is a great way to stay top of mind.

3) Get positive attention

If you use a headshot from five years ago, your clients probably won’t give it any notice. They may have seen it many times before, so it fades into the background. Or, it doesn't reflect current trends and therefore doesn't draw their attention. When you have recent, on-trend photos to showcase your business, your clients will notice those photos. Make them stop scrolling with eye-catching images of you and your brand.

4) Create connections

With an updated set of personal branding photos, you open the door to connecting with your clients. Not only do they know you are active and invested in your business, but you also stay top of mind and gain positive attention for using eye-catching and on-trend photos. Make a small investment in updated personal branding photos to connect with your clients and grow your business. Book your session today!

Why a Current Headshot Matters

If you are a busy professional, updating your headshot photo may not seem like a high priority. I’m here to tell you, using current headshots matters more than you may think! Let me explain why.

If you are a busy professional, updating your headshot photo may not seem like a high priority. I’m here to tell you, using current headshots matters more than you may think! Let me explain why.

Do you know what Catfishing is?

catfishing /ˈkatˌfiSHiNG/ noun

1. the activity of catching catfish. "With the Mississippi River far below its normal level, the catfishing kept getting better and better".

2. INFORMAL (US) the process of luring someone into a relationship by means of a fictional online persona. "He was a victim of catfishing himself”.

In this scenario, I'm referring to the 2nd definition.

Establish and maintain trust

Your headshot is your online persona that gives your potential clients an additional piece of evidence that they can trust you.

What if your headshot is from a few years ago, and when you meet your client in person your look has changed? This can lead to an awkward exchange between you and your client because they are surprised at what they see. But more importantly, this can affect the trust they have in you.

You can avoid any loss of trust with your potential clients by presenting a true representation of yourself with a current headshot.

Make a great first impression

A headshot is often the first impression you make on a future client. It’s like a virtual business card. Would you hand out cards with outdated contact information? Of course not. If you are using a dated image of yourself on your website, social media, or email signature, it might give the impression that you are unorganized, or simply don’t care about your image. This is certainly not the impression you want to give to potential clients. On the other hand, a headshot that matches your current image in an updated style will help create a great first impression.

So why does a current headshot matter? It can help you create the best possible first impression, establish and maintain trust with your clients, and by extension help grow your business!

That sounds like a no-brainer, right? Even better, it’s easy to fit a headshot session into even the busiest schedule. If you have 20 minutes, we can capture an eye-catching professional headshot that will set you apart from the crowd. Visit my booking calendar to book your session or contact me with any questions.
