Why Every Small Business Owner Needs Personal Branding Photos
Using outdated images can harm your business. Here are four reasons why every small business owner needs updated personal branding photos.
As a small business owner, you have a lot on your plate. With the many demands and endless to-do lists you juggle daily, updating your personal branding photos may seem like a low priority. But using outdated images can harm your business. Here are four reasons why every small business owner needs personal branding photos.
1) Show clients you are invested
If you are using old photos, or even worse, none at all, it might convey that you don’t care about your business. But on the other hand, having professional photos of yourself shows current and potential clients that you're active in your business and that you invest in your business, and therefore you're invested in them.
2) Stay top of mind
For any business, staying top of mind is crucial. Whether you are trying to generate new business or gain repeat business from existing clients, you want them to think of you immediately when they need your services. Showing up in your marketing with current, high-quality photos is a great way to stay top of mind.
3) Get positive attention
If you use a headshot from five years ago, your clients probably won’t give it any notice. They may have seen it many times before, so it fades into the background. Or, it doesn't reflect current trends and therefore doesn't draw their attention. When you have recent, on-trend photos to showcase your business, your clients will notice those photos. Make them stop scrolling with eye-catching images of you and your brand.
4) Create connections
With an updated set of personal branding photos, you open the door to connecting with your clients. Not only do they know you are active and invested in your business, but you also stay top of mind and gain positive attention for using eye-catching and on-trend photos. Make a small investment in updated personal branding photos to connect with your clients and grow your business. Book your session today!
Why a Current Headshot Matters
If you are a busy professional, updating your headshot photo may not seem like a high priority. I’m here to tell you, using current headshots matters more than you may think! Let me explain why.

Do you know what Catfishing is?
catfishing /ˈkatˌfiSHiNG/ noun
1. the activity of catching catfish. "With the Mississippi River far below its normal level, the catfishing kept getting better and better".
2. INFORMAL (US) the process of luring someone into a relationship by means of a fictional online persona. "He was a victim of catfishing himself”.
In this scenario, I'm referring to the 2nd definition.
Establish and maintain trust
Your headshot is your online persona that gives your potential clients an additional piece of evidence that they can trust you.
What if your headshot is from a few years ago, and when you meet your client in person your look has changed? This can lead to an awkward exchange between you and your client because they are surprised at what they see. But more importantly, this can affect the trust they have in you.
You can avoid any loss of trust with your potential clients by presenting a true representation of yourself with a current headshot.
Make a great first impression
A headshot is often the first impression you make on a future client. It’s like a virtual business card. Would you hand out cards with outdated contact information? Of course not. If you are using a dated image of yourself on your website, social media, or email signature, it might give the impression that you are unorganized, or simply don’t care about your image. This is certainly not the impression you want to give to potential clients. On the other hand, a headshot that matches your current image in an updated style will help create a great first impression.
So why does a current headshot matter? It can help you create the best possible first impression, establish and maintain trust with your clients, and by extension help grow your business!
That sounds like a no-brainer, right? Even better, it’s easy to fit a headshot session into even the busiest schedule. If you have 20 minutes, we can capture an eye-catching professional headshot that will set you apart from the crowd. Visit my booking calendar to book your session or contact me with any questions.

What to Wear to your Personal Branding Photo Shoot
Follow these tips to help you decide what to wear to your personal branding photo shoot and take the stress out of preparing for your session.
If you are preparing for a personal branding photo shoot, you may feel a lot of pressure to pick the perfect outfit. Brand photos are often the first impression you make to a potential client, so what you wear and how you present yourself are important.
The clothes you choose should make you look great and feel amazing so you can present your best self in your photos. I recommend choosing a couple of outfits to bring to your session; one casual, and one that is a bit more formal. This will allow us to capture a range of images to use in your marketing materials.
Follow these tips to help you decide what to wear to your personal branding photo shoot and take the stress out of preparing for your session.
1. An outfit with your brand colors.
Are there colors that you use prominently in your branding? Consider incorporating those into your looks for your personal branding photo shoot. You may choose a blouse or a pocket square to add that splash of color. This will tie your photos together with your brand to really enhance the professional look of your marketing.
2. The outfit you'd wear to a nice dinner with your best client.
For your more formal outfit, aim for polished yet comfortable. Think about what you might wear on a special occasion, such as taking your best client out to a nice dinner. Using this scenario will help you achieve the right balance of presenting yourself in your best light and staying true to yourself.
3. The outfit you'd wear to a typical client meeting.
What do you wear to work every day? Pick your favorite outfit and bring that to your session for your second outfit option. This should be something you are very comfortable and confident in. It should show your sense of style but also be professional enough for introducing yourself to clients.
Choosing what to wear for your personal branding photo shoots is quite simple when you think about it. You may not even need to make a special shopping trip. Look through your closet and select your favorite outfits that showcase your true personality. To enhance your brand image, include your brand colors in your outfit or accessories. When you are comfortable in your skin, you will also be more confident, and that will show in your photos.
What to Wear to your Corporate Headshot Photo Shoot
Booking your corporate headshot session is easy, but what comes next may seem like a challenge. It’s the age-old question, “What am I going to wear?!”
Follow these top 3 tips for what to wear to your corporate headshot photo shoot to make the decision easy.
Scheduling your corporate headshot session is easy, but what comes next may seem like a challenge. It’s the age-old question, “What am I going to wear?!”
Follow these top 3 tips for what to wear to your corporate headshot photo shoot to make the decision easy.
1. Wear a top with a flattering neckline.
Does a lower neckline look best on you? Or do you prefer a tighter neckline? All types can look good in a headshot but try to choose one that looks the most flattering on you. If you’re not sure what that is, flip through some photos of yourself and pay attention to the styles that you look best in. Or ask a trustworthy friend to help narrow down your options.
2. Wear a color looks good with your complexion and hair color.
Do you know that shirt you wear and everyone says "that color looks so good on you!"? Bring that color top to your session. The colors in your outfit should complement your hair color and complexion. Stay away from anything that will wash you out, and avoid anything with bold graphics or text as they tend to be distracting.
3. Wear clothes that you feel comfortable in.
Finally, it’s important to feel comfortable in the clothes you're wearing. If you like a shirt because it looks good on the hanger, but it doesn't feel good on your body, leave it at home. Maybe the fabric is itchy, maybe it's too tight, or maybe the seams don't lay right on your shoulders. When you feel uncomfortable in your clothes it will show in your photos.
If you follow these simple tips, I know you’ll nail the outfit selection for your corporate headshot photo shoot.
I am also available to offer a second opinion if needed. I encourage my clients to bring a few different outfit options to their session, then we can look through them together to choose which will be best.
During our time together, I want to make sure you feel relaxed, comfortable, and looking your best so we can capture your absolute best side!

Entrepreneurs and small business owners have an incredible amount of passion for their businesses. They pour so much energy and hard work into building their brands and providing valuable services to their clients that it is often an extension of themselves. I love to see that passion in their eyes and body language and capture it in photos. I especially love working with repeat clients when I get to see all the growth achieved as a result of their hard work.
2. Bringing out the best in you to show off what you can give your clients.
Personal branding photoshoots are fun because they allow me to get to know you better. Before our session, I like to discuss your goals, both for your business and for the photoshoot. 3 Must-Have Photos from your Personal Branding Session
While there are many poses and types of photos that work well for personal branding, there are 3 must-have photos I recommend to everyone during their session.
Are you looking for photo ideas for your personal branding session? I have worked with countless small business owners to capture their personalities in photos for their brand marketing and I’ve picked up several tips and tricks along the way.
For many people, posing in front of a camera can feel awkward and uncomfortable. How should you stand, what do you do with your hands? I try to make you feel as comfortable as possible, telling you exactly how to pose and what facial expression to use that will look attractive and natural in your headshots.
While there are many poses and types of photos that work well for personal branding, there are 3 must-have photos I recommend to everyone during their session. You can find examples below from a session with Julia, a recent client. Use these styles as a starting point and inject your personality to create the perfect starter collection of personal branding photos.
1. The Classic Headshot
The first must-have photo is the classic headshot. This is a strong pose, looking directly into the camera and smiling. A headshot is often the first impression you give, so make sure it is friendly and fits your brand personality. You may choose to use eye-catching colors in your outfit and background like Julia, or keep the colors more natural, keeping all the attention on your face.
2. Looking away from the camera laughing
Another must-have photo is one where you are looking away from the camera while laughing. This should look natural and effortless, which may seem difficult to stage, but is easy to achieve with a few simple tricks! This type of photo will make you seem friendly and approachable and works great to show your fun and easy-going side.
3. Engaged eyes looking into the camera
Lastly, the third must-have photo I suggest for your personal branding session is shown perfectly here by Julia. Her pose is confident and comfortable, her eyes are engaged, and she is looking directly into the camera. This creates an impression that she is strong, assured, and ready to take on anything.
By utilizing these three must-have photos in your personal branding session, you’ll have a great variety to use in all your marketing materials. I can’t wait to help your capture these photos and more! Ready to test out these photo styles for yourself? Use my booking calendar to schedule a time that works for you.

Definition: Personal branding is the conscious and intentional effort to create and influence public perception of an individual by positioning them as an authority in their industry, elevating their credibility, and differentiating themselves from the competition, to ultimately advance their career, widen their circle of influence, and have a larger impact.[https://personalbrand.com/definition/]
I view Personal Branding as an opportunity to create that person-to-person connection with your clients through beautiful photos of yourself that illustrate your style, values and personality.
Benefits of Personal Branding:
Shows that you are Human
That know-like-trust factor comes much easier when your potential clients can see that you are in fact relatable.
Makes you Unique and Authentic
If you're looking for a leg up to stand out from the competition then you'll get that by sharing clean, bright, on-brand photos of yourself. Photos of you being your authentic self will only elevate your image but they will keep you top of mind for your clients.
Helps convert leads into paying clients
When a potential client sees the professional photos on your social media and website, you'll automatically earn a significant portion of their trust. If you have high standards for how to represent your business then it goes to say that your the experience your client will have with you and your business will align with those high standards.
Gets you out there
Personal Branding photos of you and your business will give you so much more visability than if you didn't have photos to share.

3 Tricks to Look your BEST in your Photos
It’s not required that you use these tricks in your session but it could be helpful while you’re preparing. As your photographer, I’ll use my 15+ years of experience to coach you on how to pose and which expressions to give so we get the best photos of you we can.
Trick #1: Choose the right outfit
Each body type looks best in different types of clothing.
If you’re looking to slim yourself, skip any boxy or shapeless pieces. Oversized pieces can easily make you look wider and bigger.
Avoid showing off too much. We’ll be sitting and creating movement in your photos so if your skirt is too short or your top is too low you could end up showing off more than you want.
V-necks are always a good choice. They elongate your neck and open up your face.
Trick #2: Avoid the straight forward look
As your photographer, I’ll be coaching you throughout our shoot on how to pose. But here’s an idea of what we’re going for:
Rotate your body so your shoulders and feet are at a 45 angle from the camera.
Look towards the camera (so that your chin is pointing towards your front shoulder) then lift your chin ever so slightly. A little head turn makes a big difference.
Trick #3: Practice in the mirror.
This may seem silly, but I promise it helps! Practice your smile, your posture, the way you prefer to tilt your head. And try trick #2 - you’ll see how it makes a difference!
Bonus Trick: Be aware of your posture.
I’ll definitely direct you to bring your shoulders back or stand up straight if I notice slouching. Sometimes if we try to fix our posture too much it will look uncomfortable. To achieve good posture with a natural look, I suggest taking a second to relax your whole body while you’re standing in position and take a big deep breath to release your shoulders. And then transition up into the shoulders back position when you look back at the camera.
All in all, keep in mind that everyone is different. Some of these tips above might need some tweaking to make them work for you. Try different angles, facial expressions and hand placement, and then commit some of the best ones to memory so you can try them out when you’re in front of the camera.
I absolutely love bringing out the best in each and every one of my clients (including you!) so come to your session with an open mind and ready to be coached by me.

Is a Professional Headshot Session Worth It?
This is a great question. And obviously I'm going to say a big YES! But let's break it down a little.
This is a great question. And obviously I'm going to say a big YES!
But let's break it down a little.
I like to tell my potential clients who are on the fence about investing in a professional headshot session "you don't get a second chance to make a first impression".
The headshot you present in your email signature, your social profile, your video conference pause screen, and all your marketing materials is often the first look your clients and colleagues get of you.
Do you want that first impression to be non-professional? Of course not. The investment you're making now in a professional headshot will pay off more than ten-fold in the following year.
Put your best self forward
When you show that you care about your professional image, it speaks volumes about you. It is easy to tell when you have taken a shortcut and used a photo you took on your smart phone or cropped from an event photo. Using a professional headshot says you take pride in yourself and your work and want to put your best self forward at all times.
As a professional headshot photographer, I know how to use lighting to create an eye-catching image. I will make you feel comfortable and suggest poses that will be natural and look great on camera.
If you’re still on the fence, I invite you to browse my website to learn more about me and my services. Read about other’s experiences and check out my portfolio to see some of the professional headshots I have been privileged to capture.
So, is a professional headshot session worth it? You know my answer, and I hope you agree!
If you’re ready to move forward and schedule a session, see my booking calendar for details. As always, please reach out with any questions.
How to Prepare for your Personal Branding Session
Are you wondering what the best way to prepare for a personal branding session? I have a few tips to share to help you get ready to present your best self to your clients.
Congratulations on taking the step to schedule a personal branding session with me! I’m so looking forward to our time together when we will capture amazing portraits to showcase your unique brand.
Are you wondering what the best way to prepare for a personal branding session? In addition to my general guide on preparing for your headshot session, I have a few tips to share to help you get ready to present your best self to your clients.
1. Don’t wait to plan your outfits
Start putting together your outfits as soon as your session is booked. This way you'll have plenty of time to shop for a new shirt or accessories if you need to. The right outfit should make you feel confident and comfortable, and also show your personality. Try not to stress about choosing the perfect outfit. Choose what feels natural and have some fun with it!
2. Know your route
Nothing can ruin a good mood like being stressed about getting lost or being late. Calculate your route and how long it will take you to get to my studio by putting the address in your GPS before the date of your session. This will help you to know exactly how much time you need to get here and alleviate any stress.
3. Choose a mantra
Come up with a mantra that you'll say to yourself during your session. Sometimes this is a message you want to share with your clients, or an encouraging phrase that you tell yourself often. This will help you have a positive mindset and focus on all the good that will come out of your session. It can be easy to focus on the fact that you're nervous or don't like being in front of the camera, so repeating a mantra can help train your thoughts in the right direction.
These few simple steps can help prepare you for an amazing personal branding photo session experience. I can’t wait to have some fun together capturing your personality in creative, professional images to use in your marketing.
How to Prepare for your Office Headshot Session
Coordinating photos for an office full of people may seem like a daunting task, but in my experience, there are a few things you can do to make the day go smoothly. Follow these three steps to prepare for your office headshot session.
Now that you’ve scheduled a headshot session for your office, you may be wondering the best way to prepare. Coordinating photos for an office full of people may seem like a daunting task, but in my experience, there are a few things you can do to make the day go smoothly. Follow these three steps to prepare for your office headshot session.
1. Communicate clearly
Send an email to all employees who will be involved including all the details they will need to know. This includes the date, location, and time, along with your expectations on what they should wear. Send this same information on the Monday of the week when headshots are happening as well as a reminder email the day before the session.
2. Create a sign-up sheet with timeslots
The last thing you want is employees waiting around all day anxiously waiting for their turn in front of the camera. Instead, create a sign-up and give them timeslots they can sign up for. This way each employee will know the exact time they need to show up for their headshot.
3. Tell employees what to expect
Give everyone involved an idea of how the headshot will go. For example: "You'll arrive to the conference room at your scheduled time (please see attached copy of the sign-up sheet). The photographer will greet you and tell you exactly how to pose. She'll take a few photos then you'll look at each photo together and choose your favorite”. Sharing these details will help everyone feel prepared and at ease since they will know exactly what to expect.
BONUS: Provide breakfast for the office
Let everyone know ahead of time that you will be bringing in breakfast the morning of the session. Arrange a simple table of bagels, breakfast burritos, or fresh fruit. This will give them one less thing to worry about in the morning and help them feel relaxed and ready to go.
The keys to preparing for an office headshot session is to communicate clearly with your employees leading up to the day and coordinate all the little details to make sure the day goes smoothly. If you follow these easy steps, your session day will be relaxing and fun for everyone.
How to Prepare for your Corporate Headshot Session
There are a few things you can do to prepare for your corporate headshot session to make the most out our time together. By following these three steps, you can set yourself up for an enjoyable experience and help us to get your best side on camera.
I’m so happy you’ve decided to invest in yourself and schedule a corporate headshot session with me! I am honored you’ve entrusted me to capture these important images, and I can’t wait to share them with you.
There are a few things you can do to prepare for your corporate headshot session to make the most out our time together. By following these three steps, you can set yourself up for an enjoyable experience and help us to get your best side on camera.
1. Know where you’re going
Put my studio address in your GPS the day before your scheduled session. This way, you'll have an idea of the route you'll take and how long it will take you to get to my studio. Plan to arrive a few minutes early so you can take your time and arrive feeling relaxed and ready to go.
2. Lay out your clothes
On the evening before your session, lay out the clothes you'll be wearing. Make sure they're clean, pressed and ready for you. This way, you have one less thing to think about the morning of your session. Use the extra time to relax, enjoy a cup of coffee, or clear your inbox so you can be fully present during your session.
3. Show yourself some love
Set aside some time the day before your session for some good old-fashioned self-care. If you can, treat yourself to your favorite relaxing activity. Most importantly, get a good night of sleep and drink plenty of water. Your skin and eyes will thank you for the rest time and hydration.
That’s it! The best way to prepare for your corporate headshot session is to plan ahead and take care of yourself so you can feel relaxed and at your best.

Best Time to Schedule an Office Headshot Session
Are you wondering when the best time is to schedule an office headshot session? If any of these situations apply to you, it’s time!
Your company website is often the first impression of your company. Aside from providing information about what you do, it is also a reflection of who you are.
Many companies use their “about” page to introduce the members of their team, including headshots and bios. This is a wonderful way to give your company and website a personal feel, even if it’s a visitor’s first interaction with you.
Whether you are launching a new website, or feel like you might need an update, I definitely recommend scheduling a professional office headshot session. This is not only efficient, but it will ensure a consistent and professional look to your photos so you are making the best possible first impression.
Are you wondering when the best time is to schedule an office headshot session? If any of these situations apply to you, it’s time!
1. When your headshots do not have a consistent look
Take a look at your company’s “about” page. Does it include a collection of headshots, each with a different backdrop, different lighting, and different crops? It’s obvious these headshots were pieced together and not well thought out. Your company deserves the professional look of headshots with a consistent look and feel.
2. When the group photo is incomplete
Over time, there are bound to be changes to your team. You may hire new members as your company grows or say goodbye to others as they move on to other things. When the group photo on your website is no longer complete or accurate, it’s time for an update. Make your new employees feel valued and keep your marketing materials up to date; it’s a win-win!
3. When you want to stand out among your competition
When you invest in professional office headshots for your company, it has a positive impact on your business. You’ll not only provide a great first impression, but you’ll show you are up on current trends and that you value your team. Using eye-catching professional photos in your marketing is a great way to stand out among your competition.

Best Time to Schedule a Corporate Headshot Session
Are you wondering when is the best time to schedule a corporate headshot session? If any of these three situations apply to you, it’s time to make updating your corporate headshots a priority!
When you are a working professional, you are pulled in a million directions every day. With an endless to-do list and constantly shifting priorities, updating your corporate headshots may not be at the top of the list. Trust me, I get it.
I also know how important it is to present yourself in a professional and modern way in a corporate setting. Taking the time to have your headshots updated can have a big impact on your professional life.
Are you wondering when is the best time to schedule a corporate headshot session? If any of these three situations apply to you, it’s time to make updating your corporate headshots a priority!
1. If you're using a headshot from more than a year ago
When is the last time you updated your corporate headshots? Using an outdated headshot suggests that you are behind the times, and that is not a message you want to send to your professional clients. Trends typically cycle and change as often as every three months. So, getting a headshot annually is the best way to keep up with current looks.
2. If your current headshot is cropped from a group shot
Nowadays, anyone can spot the old "got dressed up for a wedding and used a group photo from the reception" headshot. You're a professional and you deserve to have your own professional headshot. Invest in a corporate headshot session to capture the best version of yourself to present to your professional network.
3. When your physical appearance has changed
Have you shed some extra weight? Did you get a new hair style? Are you wiser and more mature than the current photo you're using? If when a client meets you and you look totally different from the photo in your email signature or profile, that can affect their trust in you. It’s important to make sure your corporate headshot is a current reflection of yourself as they will see you.
Do any of these scenarios hit close to home? Don’t let any more time go by without making yourself a priority. Book a session with me to capture modern, professional headshots you can be proud of.
Best Time to Come in for Personal Branding Photos
Let’s talk personal branding photos. You know how important it is to have professional photos to showcase your personal brand. But when is the best time to come in for personal branding photos? How often should you update your headshots? In my experience, there are a few situations when you should consider refreshing your personal branding photos.
Let’s talk personal branding photos. You know how important it is to have professional photos to showcase your personal brand. But when is the best time to come in for personal branding photos? How often should you update your headshots? These are all great questions! In my experience, there are a few situations when you should consider refreshing your personal branding photos.
1. When you're starting a new company or doing a rebrand of your current company
Personal branding photos are a must when you’re starting a new business. Small business owners who have been in business for a while should also update their brand to keep up with the trends. If you're polishing up your website, logo, or brand colors, now is the perfect time to get fresh on-brand photos of yourself to go with your new look.
2. If you feel like your marketing is stale and needs a jumpstart
Keeping your marketing fresh is key to retaining your audience’s attention. When you use the same messaging and photos in your marketing materials for too long, it gets stale and will easily blend into the background. Nothing gets things looking better than some contemporary headshots. One of the easiest ways to update boring marketing is to share new photos of yourself so your clients feel confident that you know current trends.
3. When your physical appearance has changed
Have you shed some extra weight? Did you get a new hair style? Are you wiser and more mature than the current photo you're using? Think about your personal branding photos from your potential client’s point-of-view. When they see your photo in your email signature or website, they will of course associate that photo with you. If when they meet you in person you have a completely different look than the photo you put out, that could affect their trust in you and your business.
If any of these scenarios apply to you, then it’s time to come in for personal branding photos! I would love to help you capture new, on-trend headshots for you to share in updated marketing materials for your personal brand. Book an appointment to discuss your personal branding session with me.

To help you decide, here is a quick breakdown of each one, including what is included, who it is best for, and a brief summary.
Corporate Headshot Session
What it includes: 20-minute session at my studio and one retouched digital photo of your choice, with the option to purchase additional digital photos.
Who it is best for: An individual who needs an updated professional headshot. They're looking for one to three digital photos.
In summary: It's quick (only 20 minutes long), efficient (we'll shoot directly to my laptop so we can view our shots immediately) and easy (book online then receive your retouched digital photo two business days after your session).
Office Headshot Session
What it includes: I'll travel to your office in the Denver Metro Area and we'll spend as long as it takes to photograph your team of employees. Office sessions are invoiced by the hour and include six retouched digital photos per hour of shooting, with the option to purchase additional digital photos.
Who it is best for: There are a few situations when it makes sense to consider an office headshot session.
1) Companies that have three or more people who need to be photographed.
2) Companies that have a specific backdrop at their office that needs to be in each photo.
3) Companies with employees who have limited time to get their headshot taken so they want to save time on travel by having me come to their office.
In summary: Office headshots are most cost efficient for companies that have three or more employees to be photographed, and when it's more convenient for me to travel to them instead of having all their employees come to my studio.
Personal Branding Session
What it includes: 1 hour session of one person at my studio with three to five different outfits. Digital photos are purchased after your session.
Who it is best for: Small business owners or entrepreneurs who need updated content for their marketing, social media, website, or networking.
In summary: Personal branding sessions are best for small business owners who need five or more digital photos to use across all their marketing, including social media, printed material, and their online presence. If you value having a fresh persona to share with potential clients, then a personal branding session is for you.
